Okay hello friends, gather round, I’m going to talk about Daft Punk.
So. Those are my tattoos. They’re the only tattoos on my body that I can see, and I see them every single day. They’re a little faded and blurred out now, and they were never perfect to begin with but I love them all the same.
Here’s the thing, the big secret about me - I don’t actually give a shit about music most of the time. I love music, sure, I have it on almost constantly, but I’m not one of those people who can passionately talk about chords or genres or lyrical styles or any of that stuff. I like pretty much anything.
I’m not a connoisseur.
And then there’s Daft Punk.
Daft Punk is the only band I’ve ever felt consistently, completely positive about their status as “my favorite band”. I like a lot of music. I listen to a lot of things. The sky is blue, water is wet, and Daft Punk is my favorite band.
"But Meg, you just said you don’t give a shit about music-"
Yes, I know. That’s not the point.
The point is Daft Punk isn’t just a band to me. Sure, I adore their music, but there’s more than that. Daft Punk is two nerdy French kids who loved movies and art and sci-fi and decided, fuck it, let’s be robots.
Daft Punk is two people who were passionate about something they loved even when that thing they loved was super fucking weird and they never apologized for it or compromised about it.
Daft Punk is making movies instead of music videos, Daft Punk is making up mythology for yourself, Daft Punk is having so much fucking fun doing something you love and saying fuck off to people who tell you to stop or to do it differently.
Daft Punk is collaborating. Daft Punk changing every few years. Daft Punk is reinventing yourself whenever and why ever you feel like it.
That’s why I like them.
That’s why I keep liking them.
I’m not a Daft blog anymore, and that’s okay. I’m allowed to change as much as they are, and I’m not going to be sorry for it. But something that won’t change for me is the things I learned about myself as a fan of them.
Their music will always be important to me, but their art changed my life.
And that’s a story about me, tumblr.
